How I Survived My Period While Camping – And Loved It!
May 08, 2024
I love being outdoors and I’m so glad that my period didn’t stop me! Yup, you heard it right. This spring break, I managed my period while camping in Southern Utah, and let me tell you, it wasn’t nearly as much of an annoyance as I expected! I'm Courtney, one of the owners at here from Poppins Period, I thought it would be fun to share my experience.
🏕️ Camping with a Twist
Imagine this: You’ve just set up your tent, the fire is going, and then... surprise! Aunt Flo decides to visit. Was I upset? Nah. Annoyed? Maybe a little. Prepared? OBVIOUSLY! You know I packed my trusty Poppins Period products, ready for whatever came my way.
👭 Why Period Underwear Became My Best Friend
I started with a plan to mostly use my menstrual cup, but it didn’t take long before period underwear stole the camping show. With lots of dirt and dust around (thanks, nature) and communal bathrooms at the campsite, these undies were the answer. They were comfortable, hassle-free, they hold as much menstrual fluid as my cup, and let’s be honest—nobody wants to rinse a cup in a chilly public bathroom at 6 AM. Even though I was prepared with my cup, the underwear quickly ended up being a more practical option.
I rinsed my period undies in the bathroom sink—no audience every showed up, but honestly, I think at this point we're all just doing the best we can and not judging a woman dealing with her period right?! I hung them in my tent to dry, by the next day they were dry. Since I only brought a few pairs, I rotated through them and it worked out great!
🏞️ Hiking Through Zion
Yes, I hiked through Zion National Park rocking my period underwear. It was great! The peace of mind period underwear brings is unmatched. If we weren’t camping, a menstrual cup would be my go-to for hiking. I could’ve popped it in that morning, but laziness got the best of me and period underwear is just SO low effort so we went with it.
We ended up extending our trip and finished it off with a nice clean hotel stay in Las Vegas. The first thing I did? Showered and switched to the cup for that fresh feeling. I love period underwear, but I also love not even having to see my own menstrual blood except for when I empty my cup. Out of sight, out of mind!
🤔 Tips for Your Camping Trip
If you’re planning a camping trip and expecting your period, here are some things to keep in mind:
- Water Safety: Make sure any water you use for rinsing your cup is clean. If it’s safe to drink, it’s safe to use. Otherwise, stick to bottled or treated water. Or, use period underwear!
- Pack Options: Period underwear can be a low-maintenance lifesaver if you’re not up for cup hygiene. On the other hand a cup is lighter and takes less room. Think through what you’ll have access to and bring a couple options if you aren't too tight on space. You never know which you might prefer.
- Timing Is Everything: If possible, scheduling your trip right after your period. I know Spring Break doesn't care when our period is, but if you have any say, shoot for when hormone levels are optimum, energy is great, and you’ll have one less thing to remember to pack!
🌟 Wrap-Up
So, there you have it! Camping on your period doesn’t have to be a horror story. With a little preparation and the right products from Poppins Period, you can make any trip a breeze. You can get both cups + period underwear in this bundle if you are just making the switch!
Camping with kids? Non period tip, help them sleep soundly by spraying a little Magnesium Mist on everyone’s feet at bedtime!
